Bernard Frrokaj
Director of Education, Gjakova
By: Dardan Hajrizi
When Teach For Kosova began its trips to Gjakova in mid- January, the expectation was that there would be resistance towards accepting the Teach For All- based model from municipal leaders. The team was concerned that it would be difficult to gain access to school leaders, classrooms, teachers, parents, and students; the necessary components to building the teacher profile, if the municipality did not understand the program or prevented the team from conducting its visits.
However, when the Teach For Kosova team met with Gjakova’s Director of Education, Bernard Frrokaj, all concerns disappeared. Mr. Frrokaj welcomed the team with open arms, listened intently to the intricacies of the program, its purpose, mission, and most importantly the tools needed to make the Teach For Kosova program a reality.
Within one meeting, Mr. Frrokaj took it upon himself to not only get a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Ardian Gjini (mayor of Gjakova), but personally delivered the Memorandum of Understanding to him to ensure that the mayor signed it immediately.
Mr. Frrokaj expressed his concerns with the education system in Kosova in general and stated that anything that can be done to improve the quality of teachers across Kosova is worth supporting. Through his leadership and belief in the Teach For Kosova program, Mr. Frrokaj created the pathway through which Teach For Kosova was able to interact with school leaders, teachers, parents, and students. To that end, Teach For Kosova was able to learn about the challenges and opportunities that exist within Kosova’s current education system and could begin creating a teacher profile.
